Description:

NOTE: NO WALK INS AS OF 3/17/20; MUST APPLY ONLINE. Provides emergency rent and mortgage assistance to eligible city of Memphis applicants once every two years. Must show proof of a crisis within the last 90 days that prevented payment of the bill. Eligibility is not based on income, but preference is given to those off work for medical reasons. Applicants must bring proof of a temporary, unavoidable loss of employment (such as a job-layoff notice, reduction in salary or being off work due to illness or house fire. NOTE: LOSSES OF EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS OR REDUCTION IN WORK HOURS ARE NOT QUALIFYING REASONS FOR ASSISTANCE.) DTD Partner Agency.

Intake Process:

APPLY ONLINE (Click on "Apply for Emergency Assistance" icon at bottom of home page at website) or come to MIFA for in-person screenings; All requests screened Mon - Fri 7:30 am - 10:30 am, except holidays, at MIFA. Photo Identification required for all adult family members served, including picture IDs, social security cards, verification of children's ages (birth certificates, shot records, report cards), proof of your address, proof of financial crisis (layoff notice, doctor's bills), proof of all household income, cut off notice or late rent or mortgage notice. Disabled people with limited transportation may have an appointed person apply for them.

Must NOT have received MIFA assistance in last two years AND must either document temporary, unavoidable loss of income or crisis in the household that prevented payment -- such as job lay-off, house fire, reduction in hours or being off work for medical reasons -- within last 90 days
